Women's Health Physical Therapy
Physical Therapy Care for a Woman’s Special Needs
Brewer Physical Therapy is especially sensitive to a woman’s needs. We know that your body undergoes many changes throughout your life, especially during and after pregnancy.
Many concerns that arise are treatable with physical therapy, such as pelvic floor strengthening exercises, dry needling, manual therapy, and therapeutic exercise. Pelvic floor strengthening exercises treat weak or tight muscles that form a sling-like structure in the pelvic region. Bladder, bowel, and sexual function often suffer from pelvic floor disorders.
Our female-specific care includes:
- Pregnancy and postpartum care for conditions such as sciatica and rib pain (costal margin pain)
- Pelvic floor disorders including incontinence, overactive bladder, and pain during intercourse
- Low back and neck pain
- Pubic symphysis pain
- Sacroiliac pain
- Headaches
- And many more
All of these conditions are common during pregnancy due to weight gain and elevated levels of hormones such as relaxin and estrogen. These hormones tend to make joints more mobile, causing ligament laxity. Postural changes during pregnancy can also create pain and discomfort.
Biofeedback to Strengthen Pelvic Floor Muscles
Biofeedback can be used as a tool to help improve muscle performance in your pelvic floor muscles through special sensors and visual feedback. This treatment is used to help patients gain better control of their muscles by strengthening and/or improving relaxation of pelvic floor muscles to decrease symptoms of bladder and/or bowel dysfunction and pelvic pain. Biofeedback uses internal and/or external sensors to display muscle activity. The display gives patients “feedback” on how well they are activating their muscles.
Pelvic floor musculature biofeedback can be a helpful tool for patients with urine leakage, bowel leakage, constipation, and pelvic pain.
It is important to receive a thorough examination by a qualified physical therapist that is skilled in pelvic floor rehabilitation when considering options for treatment. Biofeedback is one of the many interventions that may be recommended after a thorough examination.

LATEST PHYSICAL THERAPY RESEARCH
Is physical therapy (PT) better than steroid injections? A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that patients with knee osteoarthritis treated with PT experienced less pain and better physical function after one year than patients who received steroid injections. These findings suggest the benefits of PT for knee osteoarthritis may be more long-lasting than earlier believed.
