What is Laser Therapy?
Laser therapy is a noninvasive therapy that reduces pain by using visible red and near infrared (NIR) light wavelengths and frequencies to treat a variety of conditions at their source.
Unlike surgical lasers, the therapeutic lasers gently pass through your skin without causing discomfort. When the laser is focused on areas of injury or wounds, the wavelengths and frequencies of the light create physiological changes in the cells. This process is called photobiomodulation, and it is proven to reduce acute and chronic pain and inflammation, induce nerve restoration, and more. This treatment does not affect or harm healthy tissues because the photons of light are only absorbed and utilized by the weaker cells that need them.
Benefits of laser therapy include:
Laser therapy tends to cause the blood vessels to dilate, reducing blood pressure. This antiedemic effect also activates the lymphatic drainage system. As a result of the draining of swollen areas, swelling caused by bruising and/or inflammation is reduced. Laser therapy also decreases nerve sensitivity by blocking pain transmissions from the cells to the brain. Paired with reduced inflammation, there is less excess fluid, therefore less pain transmission.
Lasers send photons of light that penetrate deep into tissue and boost cellular reproduction and growth. The laser light becomes usable energy in the cell to accelerate nutrients absorption and waste removal. This leads to faster repaired cells in tendons, ligaments, and muscles.
Laser light increases the formation of new capillaries in damaged tissue to assist in a speedier healing process. It also results in reduced scar tissue formation following tissue damage from cuts, scratches, burns, or surgery.
Laser therapy stimulates higher productivity of oxygen, food particle loads, and special enzymes for blood cells.
Laser therapy is like non-invasive acupuncture therapy as it provides musculoskeletal pain relief by stimulating muscle trigger points and acupuncture points – no needles required.
Slow healing of nerves in damaged tissue can lead to numbness and impaired limbs. Laser light accelerates nerve-cell reconnection and optimizes muscle movement. It also stimulates fibroblast development in damaged tissues. Fibroblasts are a key component of collagen, which is vital for wound healing. Collagen is required to replace or repair old and damaged tissue.
Laser light improves immunity by stimulating a chain reaction of molecule enzymes that increases cell energy to generate white blood cells and antibodies that help identify and fight foreign substances.

LATEST PHYSICAL THERAPY RESEARCH
Is physical therapy (PT) better than steroid injections? A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that patients with knee osteoarthritis treated with PT experienced less pain and better physical function after one year than patients who received steroid injections. These findings suggest the benefits of PT for knee osteoarthritis may be more long-lasting than earlier believed.
